Chawal ki Roti - Chawal ki Roti Recipe

Chawal ki Roti, RotiChawal ki Roti(rice bread) is very tasty and is eaten all over India. In Bihar, Chawal ki Roti with sweet and sour pumpkin curry, while spicy brinjal curry and coconut chutney with this roti is loved in Bangalore and Mysore.

- Ingredients for Chawal ki Roti :

 
  • Rice flour - 1 cup
  • Salt - 1/4 tsp (to taste)
  • Oil - 2 tbsp

- How to make Chawal ki Roti :

 
To prepare the dough of rice flour, pour 1 1/4 cup(keep 1/4 cup separately and boil 1 cup)water in a utensil and set to boil. Add   salt and 2 tsp oil in boiling water, set on a low flame. Now add the rice flour and mix, turn off the gas. Cover the dough and keep aside for 5 minutes so that it becomes soft.
 
Now put the dough in a big bowl and knead thoroughly till the dough is similar to that of chapati.  Cover the soft dough and set aside for 15-20 minutes allowing it to ferment.
 
The rice dough is ready to prepare Chawal ki Roti. Place a pan on the gas to heat. Break a lemon sized piece from the dough and shape it into a ball. Apply dry flour on the dough piece then expand it a bit by keepin it on a board and pressing with your hand. Apply some more dry flour then gently roll the roti as you press its edges.
Carefully pick up the roti and place on the heated pan. When the roti is cooked on the lower surface we will turn it over. We can press the roti gently with a ladle, cook till brown spots appear on it.  Cook roti till it turns light brown on both sides. Take out cooked roti on a bowl on a plate or a plate covered with aluminium  foil. Similarly cook all the rotis.
 

- How to make Masala Rice flour Roti :

 
To make  Masala Rice Roti we need rice flour, 1/2 tsp jeera(cumin seeds), 1 finely chopped green chilly, half-inch long piece(grated) ginger,  1 tbsp green coriander(finely chopped) and if you prefer onion then finely chop 1/2 of it for use.
 
When the flour is put in boiling water, add all of the above mentioned spices too. Now in the similar manner, knead the flour thoroughly till a soft and smooth dough is formed. Masala Rice flour Roti is prepared, serve with chutney, pickle and any of your favourite curries.
