How to make Jackfruit Bharta

To prepare Jackfruit Bharta take one raw jackfruit, wash it and after applying little oil to your hands cut the jackfruit into pieces.

Put the pieces of jackfruit in a cooker followed by ½ cup of water, ¼ tsp of salt, ¼ tsp of turmeric powder, close the lid and allow jackfruit to boil. After 1 whistle goes off, lower the flame and let it boil for 2 minutes then turn off the gas. Until all of the pressure escapes from the cooker let us prepare the spices for the Bharta.

Chop the tomatoes finely. Cut off the stems of the green chillies and chop them into fine pieces. Peel, wash then grate the ginger.

Pour oil in a Kadhai(pan) and heat it. Put Heeng, Jeera and Rie into hot oil and when Jeera and Rie are lightly fried add turmeric powder, green chillies, ginger, chopped tomatoes, red chilli powder and salt then mix well. Cover the tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes so that the tomatoes are cooked and soft.

The pressure is removed from the cooker, open it and check the jackfruit. The jackfruit has turned soft, take it out from the cooker into a bowl. Remove excess water, press the jackfruit with a spoon and mash it a little.

Add the boiled jackfruit to the fried spice with Garam masala and let the Jackfruit Bharta cook for 2-3 minutes covered on a low flame. This is done so that all the spices are absorbed in the jackfruit. Open the lid and mix Bharta after adding green Dhaniya to it. Mouth watering Jackfruit Bharta is now ready.

Take out Jackfruit Bharta in a bowl and serve with chapatis, paranthas, naan or rice.
